Producing a documentary video for the major exhibition “SUN”

paradise produced a documentary video of artist YOSHIROTTEN, released in Hypebeast.JP’s series “Diaries.” Filmed at the large-scale installation “SUN” during SUMMER SONIC 2023, in collaboration with the Agency for Cultural Affairs, the video captures moments where art, audience, and space intersect amid the festival’s intense energy.

In this project, paradise captured the artist’s creativity and the feel of the event on video, while also trying to tell the story in a way that brings the experience back to life.

On-Site Direction and Filming Management with a Multi-Team Setup

“SUN” was a multi-area exhibition at the SUMMER SONIC venue, with installations set up simultaneously under tight deadlines, making it a highly dynamic project. paradise managed overall production—directing multiple filming teams, overseeing the entire process, and documenting the artist’s activities and evolving works. We dedicated significant time to location scouting and pre-event route simulations to determine the best camera angles and shots for each installation point. This careful planning allowed for greater flexibility during editing later on. Balancing documentary storytelling with high-quality filmmaking, we demonstrated our strength in both creative vision and practical execution.

Film Structure and Editing to Recreate the Vision

A key focus was creating more than just a simple recording; we carefully crafted a structure that reflects the artist’s philosophy and aesthetic vision. The installation SUN brings to life YOSHIROTTEN’s cosmic and natural perspectives, along with his thoughtful approach to light and space. To capture this, our film team communicated with the artist to grasp these ideas, which guided our selection of footage and editing decisions. The scenes, drawn from hours of footage, were arranged not in chronological order but based on sensory connections and rhythm. Every detail—from music choice and shot length to fade timing—was designed to create an immersive experience, making viewers feel as if they were actually inside the exhibition space. The final video invited viewers to immerse themselves in the venue’s atmosphere while deeply engaging with the artwork.
